When using pediatric AED pads on an infant (under 1 year old), proper placement is crucial:
Placement: Place one pad on the center of the chest and the other on the back, between the shoulder blades. This is referred to as the anterior-posterior placement.
Pad Size: Always use pads specifically designed for children (pediatric pads). Adult pads are too large and can cause arcing or other complications. If pediatric pads aren't available, use adult pads but ensure they don't touch each other.
Dosage: Pediatric pads attenuate the electrical dose delivered, making it safer for the infant's smaller heart. Using adult pads can deliver too high of a dosage.
Caution: Never allow the pads to touch or overlap. If the infant is too small, place one pad on the chest and the other on the back in an anterior-posterior position. This prevents arcing.
